From Bengaluru

16526 KSR Bengaluru–Kanniyakumari Express

Train
DepartKSR Bengaluru City · 20:10
ArriveVarkala Sivagiri · ~10:54 +1
Duration~14h 45m

Fare: ₹425 – ₹2,750 depending on class

Overnight sleeper / Volvo bus

Bus
Road distance~680–700 km
Duration~12–16 hrs

Fare: ₹800 – ₹2,500 (seater to AC sleeper)

From Mangaluru

16603 Maveli Express

Train
DepartMangaluru Central · 17:40
ArriveVarkala · ~04:52 +1
Duration~11h 12m

Runs daily. Best-timed option: leaves in the evening, gets in before sunrise, no need to burn a whole day either side.

Fare: ₹200 – ₹800 depending on class

16630 Malabar Express (alt.)

Train
DepartMangaluru Central · 18:15
ArriveVarkala · ~06:47 +1

Overnight bus

Bus
Road distance~560–590 km

From Bengaluru

16573 Yesvantpur–Puducherry Weekly Express

Train
DepartYesvantpur Jn · 20:45
ArrivePuducherry · ~07:15 +1
Duration~10h 30m

This train runs exactly one night a week, Fridays. September 11 is a Friday, so this is the one night it goes.

★ Runs the night you're travelling
Fare: ~₹300 – ₹1,200 depending on class

Overnight sleeper / Volvo bus

Bus
Road distance~300–320 km
Duration~6.5–8 hrs

Via NH77 through Hosur, Krishnagiri and Tiruvannamalai. 50+ buses a day on this route; last departure is close to midnight, so a "leave after dinner" plan works fine.

Fare: ₹400 – ₹1,600 (seater to AC sleeper/Volvo)

From Mangaluru

16856 MAQ–PDY Express

Train
DepartMangaluru Central · ~16:35
ArrivePuducherry · ~10:15 +1
Duration~17h 40m

Only runs Fridays and Sundays. The Friday service does line up with the 11th, but it leaves mid-afternoon, not at night, and it's a long single haul.

Fare: ~₹415 – ₹1,700

No direct bus

Bus
Road distance~660–670 km
Realistic duration~13–15 hrs, with a change

There's no single overnight bus for this leg. The practical route is a change at Bengaluru. This is the weak link in a Pondicherry plan.

⚠ Long haul either way, take the Friday train

Places to visit

The short list: enough for a full weekend without rushing.

03
Varkala Cliff aerial view

Varkala Cliff (North Cliff)

The red laterite clifftop walk lined with cafes. This is where everyone ends up for sunset, every evening.

Papanasam Beach aerial view

Papanasam Beach

The main beach right below the cliff. Locals consider it holy; most visitors just come for the swim.

Kappil Lake aerial view

Kappil Lake

~7 km north, where the backwater meets the sea. Quiet boat rides, coconut groves, a break from the crowds.

BEACHES

Odayam & Edava Beaches

Shorter, quieter stretches a walk or short tuk-tuk north of the main beach. Good for an early morning with no crowd.

TEMPLE

Janardhana Swamy Temple

A 2,000-year-old Vishnu temple right above the cliff, worth the short detour for the architecture alone.

North Cliff market at night

North Cliff market

Tibetan stalls, silver jewellery, spices and sarongs strung along the cliff path. Good for the last-evening shopping run.

STREETS

White Town (French Quarter)

Pastel colonial streets laid out on a grid, best explored slowly on a rented bicycle.

BEACH

Promenade / Rock Beach

The sunset spot. A walk past the War Memorial and the Gandhi statue with the whole town out for the evening.

DOME

Auroville & the Matrimandir

The golden meditation dome, ~10 km out of town. Book the free viewing pass online a day ahead, walk-ins get turned away.

ASHRAM

Sri Aurobindo Ashram

A quiet, flower-covered courtyard in the middle of White Town. Worth ten minutes even if you're not there for it.

SURF

Serenity & Paradise Beach

Better swimming and surf than the town beach, a short ride out. Paradise Beach needs a quick boat crossing to reach.

CAFÉS

The café crawl

Baker Street, Coromandel Café, Café des Arts. The French-Indian menu is half the reason people come to Pondicherry at all.

So which one

07
If Bengaluru is doing most of the deciding

Pick Pondicherry

~310 km and a 6.5–8 hr bus, or the once-a-week Yesvantpur–Puducherry Express that happens to run the exact night of the 11th. It's about the easiest overnight trip out of Bengaluru there is.

The catch: Mangaluru has no direct bus here, and the only direct train runs a long ~17h afternoon haul, twice a week. Whoever's coming from Mangaluru has the harder leg.

If the trip needs to be fair to both cities

Pick Varkala

Both legs are direct, both are genuine overnight trains timed for a night departure, and neither city has a dramatically worse trip than the other (~15h from Bengaluru, ~11–12h from Mangaluru).

The trade-off: it's a longer haul from Bengaluru than Pondicherry is, for anyone starting there.
